The Boulder Group’s Rock Leading School is accepting student applications. The purpose of this school is to train prospective and beginning leaders in the proper techniques to lead rock climbs safely and efficiently. It is anticipated that sixteen people will attend. As a bonus for their volunteer efforts, qualified Basic Rock School assistants and rock climb co-leaders will be given preference.

This class will consist of one evening lecture and three field trips on the dates listed below. The cost of the class is $110. The climbs selected for you to lead will be based on your ability and will be rated 5.6 or less. You will be encouraged to lead at least one climb without a safety top-rope during the course although this is not a requirement for successful completion of the course. Previous rock leading experience is not required.


Introductory lecture: Tuesday, June 5, 7pm, clubroom (located next to Neptune’s)
—For those registered for the Rock Traditional Leading School, the course begins today. Discussion will focus on safety considerations and psychological factors associated with making the transition to the sharp end of the rope.

Field trip #1: Saturday, June 16
The use of natural and artificial protection, construction of belay anchors, racking of equipment and placement of gear on lead will be introduced. This field trip is only open to students of the CMC Rock Leading School. Contact your pre-determined instructor for meeting time and place.

Field trip #2: Saturday, June 23
Students will practice placing protection, extending placements with runners, clipping the lead rope and construction belay anchors on single-pitch climbs. This field trip is only open to students of the CMC Rock Leading School. Contact your pre-determined instructor for meeting time and place.

Field trip #3: Saturday, June 30
It will emphasize multi-pitch leading techniques, including route finding and lead rack management. This field trip is only open to students of the CMC Rock Leading School. Contact your pre-determined instructor for meeting time and place.

If you meet the requirements listed below, please complete the RLS application and student waivers located at Rock Leading School. Selection will be based on past climbing experience and recommendations from past BRS senior instructors and CMC trip leaders.

The minimum requirements for applicants are:
1. Current CMC membership.
2. Ability to attend the lecture and all three field trips.
3. Completion of Basic Rock School or equivalent.
4. “Demonstrated” ability to comfortably follow/top-rope outdoor rock climbs at or above the 5.6 level.

Helmets, ropes and basic lead rack will be provided. However, you are encouraged to bring and use your own gear if you wish.
Required Gear: Rock climbing harness, Rock climbing shoes, Rock climbing helmet, Belay/rappel device, Leather belay gloves, Prussik loops, Nut removal tool, 2 locking, and 2 regular carabiners.
Provided: Helmets, ropes and basic lead rack. However, you are encouraged to bring and use your own gear.
